This was a pretty sign. We cut the letters out of 1/4" aluminum and had them polished. The backer board was supplied to us. It was 3/4" hardwood with a beautiful wood veneer. We're not sure what kind of wood the veneer was (maybe rosewood?) but it had a lot of personality. We stud-mounted our letters onto the panel and put keyhole slots in the back.
